It is important to understand how biomagnetic therapy can work to understand why Magne-Sleep does it better.  It's begins with OUR superbly balanced mix of high quality magnets and the very best quality wool, and progresses through how we use them, then ends with a product that works now … and for a long, long time.

THE FACTS - AND THE FICTION
Unfortunately, some marketers of magnetic underlays may use misleading ways to try and cover up the shortcomings of their product.  For example, they may claim to have "more wool" and use expressions like "a total of 1,000 grams of wool".  This is deceptive, as a Single size will obviously have a lot less wool than a Queen or King.  The correct description is "grams per square metre (gsm)" which allows you to to estimate exactly how much wool is in the product you're buying.   Magne-Sleep underlays have 500 grams of wool per square metre.  That means a Queen size (the biggest seller in the range, measuring a total of 3 square metres) has 1,500 grams of superb merino lambswool - a lot more than the 1,000 grams that others may claim is "the most" or "the best".

We strongly recommend you ask questions before you buy.  Don't be persuaded or pushed into buying by aggressive marketers.   Don't accept vague answers or sweeping (and totally meaningless) claims of "we're the best" that some marketers may use to hide their lack of knowledge.   Don't believe a very high price automatically means higher quality - you may simply be paying for a large marketing budget that's factored into the price.  We believe Magne-Sleep offers you the best combination of quality and price - and we're happy to support this opinion with facts - we'll leave the fiction to others.

MAGNE-SLEEP'S BETTER MAGNETS
We use ceramic strontium ferrite magnets with a manufacturer’s surface rating of 1,000 gauss.  Each magnets measure 15mmx4mm and is classified as unipole: meaning the negative and positive poles are on opposite faces of the magnet.  (Multi-pole magnets, where both poles are present on the same face, tend to have less projected strength and are, we believe, less effective in helping you.)
Magne-Sleep magnets have an estimated life of beyond 20 years.  All magnets will gradually lose strength through their lifetime – but the type of magnet we use is considered to be among the most durable available today.
To damage these magnets, you would need to subject them to extreme temperatures (in excess of 200 degrees Celsius) or impact them very harshly.  Their size and thickness makes them virtually indestructible through normal use.

MAGNE-SLEEP’S BETTER POLARITY & PLACEMENT
While the strength and life of the magnet is important, just as vital is the way the magnets are placed.  We fix all our magnets with the North-seeking, Negative pole facing your body.  This is believed by biomagnetic therapy authorities and experts to be the most effective way to relieve pain, relax the body and encourage the all-important “bounce back” factor.
Each magnet is held in place with a strong adhesive, then individually sewn around.  In the highly unlikely event of the adhesive malfunctioning, the individual sewing ensures the magnet cannot “migrate” and clump on top of others to cause uncomfortable lumps.
We then place the magnets in a special, strategic pattern that ensures total coverage across your sleeping area, for optimum performance.

Our greater understanding of biomagnetic therapy gives us the ability to create a product that provides more effective therapy for the reason you need it. We do not take short cuts with magnets and materials, nor in the better way we bring them together.
Our Pure Lambswool range uses the finest natural fibres to create a wonderfully comfortable product through all seasons.   Superbly held in place on your bed with corner straps and two extra-wide centre straps, this is a product that has no equal.
Our Pure Cotton range offers exceptional biomagnetic therapy at a very economical cost.  Extremely comfortable – and machine washable – these underlays are held in place with four corner straps.

You can safely use a Magne-Sleep underlay with an electric blanket (although regularly have your electric blanket checked for wiring problems).   Place the electric blanket under your Magne-Sleep.
Magne-Sleep underlays are used on all kinds of beds – sprung and foam mattresses, slat bases, waterbeds, reclining (hospital-style) beds, etc.

There have been more than 300 peer-reviewed studies conducted by scientists and clinicians into the functions and effect of biomagnetic therapy.   A great number of these are published on international websites and we suggest you conduct a comprehensive search to form your own opinions and interpretations of these studies.

Magnetic Mattress Pad Use in Patients with Fibromyalgia: a Randomized Double-blind Pilot Study

Objective: 
To determine if the chronic pain and sleep disturbances experienced by patients with fibromyalgia can be improved by sleeping on a magnetic mattress pad.
Conclusions:  Sleeping on a magnetic mattress pad, with a magnet surface field strength of 1100+/-50 Gauss, delivering 200-600 gauss at the skin surface provides statistically significant and clinically relevant pain relief and sleep improvement in subjects with fibromyalgia.  No adverse reactions were noted through the 16-week trial.

Clinical Test of Magnetic Mattress Pads – A 12-Month Double-Blind Study
Carried out by Sanikukai Hospital, Tokyo Communications Hospital and Kouseikai Suzuki Hospital, by Dr. Kazuo Shimodaira.
431 subjects (216 male, 215 female), with 375 given magnetic pads, 56 given non-magnetic pads. None of the subjects knew which pads they were sleeping on.  Subjects selected for the experiment were those with chief complaints related to: neck & shoulder pain; back and lower back pain; back pain (general); lower limb pain; insomnia; fatigue.
Results: 80.27% reported positive results, over 70% realized the effects within 3 days.
Dr Shimodaira’s conclusion: The magnetized health mattress pad is proved to be effective on neck and shoulder pain, back and lower back pain, lower limb pain, insomnia, and fatigue, and to have no side effects.

Response of Pain to Static Magnetic Fields in Post-Polio Patients: A Double-Blind Pilot Study

Objective: To determine if the chronic pain frequently presented by post-polio patients can be relieved by application of magnetic fields applied directly over an identified pain trigger point. 
Results: Patients who received the active device experienced an average pain score decrease of 4.4 +/- 3.1 on a 10-point scale.  The proportion of patients in the active-device group who reported a pain score decrease greater than the average placebo effect was 76%, compared with 19% in the placebo-device group.
Conclusions: The application of a device delivering static magnetic fields of 300 to 500 gauss over a pain trigger point results in significant and prompt relief of pain in post-polio subjects.

LUXURY LAMBSWOOL MAGNE-SLEEP - Use the nozzle of your vacuum cleaner to lift pile and remove the dust and grit that can accumulate in bedding.  From time to time, hang your Magne-Sleep underlay in the sun - this will help rejuvenate and freshen the wool.   You may spot-clean any area using a wool detergent, if necessary.
QUILTED COTTON MAGNE-SLEEP - Machine wash on a Gentle or Delicate cycle.   Use cold water, do not spin at high speed during the washing cycle, nor wring out,  simply hang to dry.   Do not spin dry, do not iron.

PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT FOR SPORT & EXERCISE

We have an increasing number of sportsmen and women competing at levels, social to elite, who are using Magne-Sleep underlays to enhance performance and promote faster recovery from impact and exercise.   While few clinical studies have addressed these issues, many believe that the claimed ability of magnets to improve blood circulation can be very benefical in boosting the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles.   Claims have been made that this regeneration effects leads to safer, quicker recovery after training or competition and increased performance during training and competition.

An article in “New Zealand Fitness Magazine”, April/May 2005, theorised that “the magnetic field accelerates the metabolism of the body and quickens pain relief.”  Later in the same artricle it is stated “ … a magnetic field may play the role of ‘magnetic doping’.  It stimulates metabolism, removes waste products faster, and supplies muscles with oxygen and nutrients.   In short, short magnets can quickly restore the body’s energy levels.”


FICTION & FACTS
From time to time we are asked questions or are told stories that are quite unusual.  Let’s try and put a few issues to rest.
Magnets do not cause cancer.   The magnets in Magne-Sleep are static magnets, and do not emit any frequency.   The low-frequency fields emitted by such items as microwaves and cellphones have been identified as possible contributors to the onset of some cancer conditions.  Don’t believe sensational stories, nor the word of self-ordained “authorities”.

All magnets have two poles.   We have been told some marketers claim their magnets have only one pole.  This defies science and is, at best, an indication that the marketer’s products may be equally dubious.  We believe (and this is verified by University of Tennessee clinicians, as published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology) that single pole (uni-directional) magnets achieve greater depth of penetration than bi-polar magnets.

All magnets are not the same.   If you cannot ascertain the properties of any magnet, do not use it.  Some – like rubberized (fridge) magnets are simply too weak to benefit you.  Similarly, excessively strong (neodymium) magnets may cause dizziness and nausea in some people, particularly if too many of these magnets are grouped too closely together.

Electromagnetic fields, as used in pulsed biomagnetic therapy, are very different to the static fields of the magnets used in Magne-Sleep.   Electromagnetic pulse therapy is far more intense and should only be conducted under the supervision of a medical professional. 

The effects of the poles are not reversed in the North and South hemispheres.

Magnets do not work by reacting with the iron in your blood.  The iron in your blood “is in a bound form and has no magnetic charge or capability of being influenced by a magnetic field.” (source: Ron Lawrence, M.D., Ph.D.)

Magnets do not cure.   Studies point to the ability of biomagnetic therapy to reduce or relieve the pain caused by many conditions.   While many of our customers have written to us using the “cure” word, we prefer to use the word “help”.

“More magnets/bigger magnets are better” is a claim many make.  In reality, it comes down to the individual quality of each magnet.  We believe in the 3P’s: Power, Position, Polarity.  Get this formula right and you have a product more likely to be helpful to its user.  Big magnets are not necessarily stronger, and lots of low-strength magnets simply add up to a low-strength product.

Scepticism is healthy.  We enjoy debate with those who wish to de-bunk our products, and we accept that there is still much to be learnt about the functions of biomagnetic therapy.   All we ask that scepticism comes with an open mind – remember that not so long ago our finest minds insisted that the Earth was flat.
